Australia has been ravaged by fires over the last three to four months. If you’re a regular reader of The Espresso you'll know that we love a good drone! Well now we’ve found FAROS (Fireproof Aerial Robot System), a fireproof drone which can navigate a fire site and provide vital data and information before firefighters go in.
Firefighting is risky business and the unpredictable nature of fire and all that it is decimating makes it extremely dangerous. Researchers at KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology) have developed a fireproof drone that can detect fires, navigate buildings and transfer vital images and data to firefighters remotely, giving them potentially life saving information before going into to fight the fire. The drone can both fly and climb walls and uses a 2D laser scanner to spot obstacles and autonomously alter it’s path or mode according to what's in front of it. Potentially a life saving innovation and yet another chapter in the drone handbook.
