Learnings from the Road

This year’s Tour de Cure Signature Tour is done and dusted so it’s back to the Espresso office and down to business. The good news is that this year’s Tour de Cure has so far raised just over $4m for research, support and prevention efforts for cancer projects for men, women and children.

This year’s Tour had it all. The first 3 days saw brutal conditions with gusty 60km freezing cold head winds, slippery roads and belting rain. We definitely earned our meal that night! As the Tour continued, conditions got better and the scenery was magnificent. The southern part of South Australia and Victoria is simply beatuiful. The welcome into each town was humbling and our massive team of riders and supporters were amazing.

A key learning from the road for me was a speech made by a young lady called Shelley Whitehurst who is currently going through chemo treatment for breast cancer. Shelley’s message was that cancer teaches us to live. Many people see cancer as an automatic death sentence but the chances of survival are greater now than ever before. Shelley has changed her way of eating, exercising, and certainly has got rid of stress in her life. An incredible lady with a powerful message, Shelley doesn’t sweat the small stuff, craves interaction with her family and friends and will let nothing get in the way of her time with her nieces and nephews.

The lesson is, don’t wait for cancer to give you a wake up call. Be proactive, tackle life head on and make sure you are living the life that you want and not merely existing day to day. Life is precious. Life is for living.
