Surfing the Data

Data, when used correctly, can open up true insights. Crowd-Sourcing has become a massive tool to enable us to access data, assistance, help or a sale. Smartfin is an attachment that sits on your surfboard like a regular fin but comes with data acquisition functionality. Essentially by crowd sourcing information from the ocean via the fin of your surfboard, technology experts can use everyday surfers to gain more knowledge about what’s going on in our vast oceans.

The fin is equipped with sensors that monitor sea salinity, acidity levels, temperature and wave motion and can be a wonderful acquisition to help with understanding coastal ecosystem factors that can be affected by climate change. It's easy to use, uploads to your Bluetooth phone once you return to the beach and sync up with the Smartfin cloud. Pretty cool concept and we’re going to see more of this sort of crowd sourcing data analytics as this industry moves forward and it’s making use of people and resources that are there but aren’t being utilised.
